This review highlights some of the problems and practical issues involved in conducting surveys of alcohol use and abuse in different cultural and social contexts and emphasizes the findings from clinical practice and alcohol research in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).
Abstract
Epidemiological studies in various regions of the USSR have indicated that comparative results require relatively uniform research procedures, although unduly rigid approaches are unnecessary. The general acceptance of common definitions and methods in relation to crucial issues would thus greatly aid the future conduct of surveys in different settings. Areas on which agreement is needed include the definition of alcohol dependence, the classification of alcohol dependence, criteria for the effectiveness of treatment, and the identification of problem drinkers. 25 references (Author abstract modified)
