This study examines the impact on drug-related crime of Operation Mantle, a problem solving, situational crime prevention approach that the South Australia Police used across metropolitan Adelaide, Australia, from October 1998 until March 1999.

Abstract

Operation Mantle used the principles of local accountability to provide an integrated approach to drug law enforcement between specialist and nonspecialist investigators, with a high reliance on local intelligence. Each local service area formed tactical teams that received support from local and central intelligence officers. The analysis examined the 6 months of the program, the 6 months before the program began, and the preceding 6 months. Results indicated that all the service areas managed to stabilize a previously escalating rate of drug-related crimes. The police have continued the program in a modified form.
