Abstract
The number of people (141,500) who were being supervised by the British probation service at the end of 1991 was marginally higher than in 1990. Criminal inquiry reports were at their highest level ever; a 7-percent increase over the 1990 figure. The number of people beginning statutory aftercare decreased by 8 percent from 1991 to 23,000, while the number of people beginning a community service order increased by 8 percent over 1990 to 41,000, a record high. There were 44,000 people beginning a probation order in 1991, which represented a 5-percent decrease over 1990 figures and the first fall in 5 years. Thirty-four percent of offenders beginning a community service order in 1991 had a previous custodial sentence. 8 tables, 6 figures, and 7 notes
