This historical overview of the use of home visitation in the early years of probation in New York State contrasts the purposes and problems of early visitation with current practices and explores similarities and differences.
Abstract
The changing nature of probation today, including felony probation, probationer classification systems, and the impact of a drug epidemic, creates a new set of concerns relating to home visitation in urban areas. In addition to the ongoing problems of excessive workloads and limited personal contacts with probationers, current problem issues include the effect of differential caseload classification, staff safety, and the increased use of probation supervision with conditions of house arrest or electronic monitoring. Unless resolved, these issues may bring an end to routine home visits by probation officers. 47 references (Author abstract modified)
