A SYNTHESIS OF WRITINGS AND OPINIONS OF PROBATION OFFICERS CONCERNING THE PROBATION SERVICE IN ENGLAND.
Abstract
THE HISTORY OF THE PROBATION SERVICE INCLUDING THE LEGAL BASIS FOR ITS EXISTENCE IS FOLLOWED BY A DISCUSSION OF THE INTERFACE BETWEEN THE PROBATION SERVICE AND PENAL INSTITUTIONS. THE DUTIES OF THE PROBATION OFFICER WITH REGARD TO HIS CASEWORK FUNCTION AND TO SPECIALIZED PROBLEMS SUCH AS MENTAL ILLNESS, ALCOHOL AND DRUGS ARE DESCRIBED. THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE SERVICE WITH THE COURTS AND THE COMMUNITY IS DISCUSSED IN TWO SEPARATE CHAPTERS. A SECTION DEALING WITH SELECTION PROCEDURES AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS FOR PROBATION OFFICERS IS PRESENTED.
