THIS ARTICLE TAKES A LOOK AT THE STATISTICS BEHIND THOSE BANK ROBBERS WHO GET AWAY AND THOSE WHO GET CAUGHT.
Abstract
THE AUTHORS POINTED OUT THREE WAYS TO MAKE PLAUSIBLE GENERALIZATIONS FROM KNOWN TO UNKNOWN OFFENDERS, AND ILLUSTRATED THEM WITH A SECONDARY ANALYSIS OF BANK ROBBERY DATA. THE FOLLOWING CONCLUSIONS CAN BE DRAWN: 1) THE ANALYSIS HAS SHOWN THAT THE SUCCESS OF BANK ROBBERS (I.E. A HIGHER AMOUNT OF MONEY AS WELL AS A GREATER CHANCE OF GETTING AWAY UNDETECTED) DEPENDS ON THE PREPARATION OF THE OFFENSE; 2) PROFESSIONAL BANK ROBBERS HAVE A HIGHER CHANCE OF REMAINING UNDETECTED, ALTHOUGH THEY ARE MORE PRONE TO BE CAUGHT LATER IN CONNECTION WITH OTHER CRIMES; AND 3) CLASS DIFFERENCES CONNECTED WITH A CHANCE OF BEING DETECTED ARE ONLY VERY SLIGHT. IT CAN BE SHOWN CLEARLY THAT DELINQUENTS FROM COMPLETE FAMILIES HAVE A HIGHER CHANCE OF GETTING AWAY UNDETECTED. LOOKING AT THE PUNISHMENT HOWEVER, IT IS SHOWN THAT THE LOWER CLASSES (AS INDICATED BY THE AMOUNT OF SCHOOLING) ARE CONSISTENTLY PUNISHED MORE SEVERELY. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)....BDS
