Abstract
The guide describes six categories of funding sources: direct corporate giving programs, company-sponsored foundations, independent foundations, operating foundations, community foundations, and community-based service organizations such as the Rotary or Chamber of Commerce. It discusses criteria and grant-making processes used by each. The guide than focuses on corporate giving, with attention to benefits for corporations, strings that may be attached to grants, and various types of corporate support. This discussion emphasizes that many corporations have not made grants to police agencies simply because they have not been asked. Other suggestions address identifying appropriate corporate targets, making contact, writing a proposal, and selecting a high-quality training program. Other chapters analyze foundation giving, detail ways to research foundations, and explore the potential of community-based organizations as a funding source. The text includes examples of successful fundraising projects. Reference collections which contain information on foundation funding are listed.
