This report provides basic information on convicted and unconvicted prisoners in Sri Lanka for the years 1999 through 2003.
Abstract
After listing the prison institutions of the country, the report lists the various categories of correctional staff and provides data on staff trained at the Center for Research and Training in Corrections for 1999-2003. Admissions data for unconvicted prisoners are then displayed by institution, age, literacy, race, religion, and marital status. The average length of time spent in detention is reported. Similar data are presented for convicted prisoners. Another section of the report presents data on direct admissions to the Training School for Youthful Offenders for 1994-2003. Characteristics of the juvenile offenders include age, residence, mental status, and literacy. Data on death sentences cover 1993-2003. Those sentenced to death between 1999 through 2003 are described according to sex, race, religion, marital status, literacy, districts, residence, previous sentences, previous convictions, income, personal habits, and occupation. Data are also provided for prisoners on work release, a licensing program, and home leave for 1993-2003. A section on drug offenders presents data for 1992-2003 and profiles offenders by type of drugs, district, race, religion, age, education, marital status, sentence length, and whether parents are alive. Other data presented pertain to escapes, recaptures, and at-large escapees; number of inmates imprisoned for default on fine payment; number treated in prisons and civil hospitals; number of deaths; and recurrent and capital expenditures per inmate.
