CONCLUDES THAT WITH MINUMUM SAFEGUARDS AS A PRECONDITION TO ETHICAL PARTICIPATION OF INMATES, MEDICAL RESEARCH IN PRISONS CAN BE BENEFICIAL TO SOCIETY, TO THE PRISON SYSTEM, AND TO THE PRISONERS THEMSELVES.
Abstract
FOUR TYPES OF RESEARCH CONDUCTED ON PRISONERS WERE FOUND. INCLUDED ARE TESTING METHODS OF TREATING PRISONERS TO CURE THEIR CRIMINALITY, TESTING NEW DRUGS FOR PHARMACEUTICAL MANUFACTURERS, ENGAGING IN MEDICAL RESEARCH NOT RELATED TO DRUGS, AND TESTING COSMETICS, HAND LOTIONS, BAND-AIDS, AND THE LIKE. SEVERAL EXAMPLES ARE PRESENTED TO SHOW INSTANCES WERE DRUGS WERE TESTED ON PRISONERS. MOST PRISONERS LOOK FORWARD TO THESE TEST BECAUSE OF THE MONETARY REWARDS THEY OFFER, AS WELL ITS EFFECT ON OBTAINING AN EARLY PAROLE.
