AN OVERVIEW OF THE FORMAT, CONTENT, PROBLEMS, AND GOALS OF SUCH INMATE-OPERATED PRISON MEDIA AS NEWSPAPERS, RADIO PROGRAMS, AND TELEVISION BROADCASTS.
Abstract
IT IS NOTED THAT THE MOST COMMON FORM OF PRISON MEDIA'S THE PRISON NEWSPAPER. THESE PUBLICATIONS RANGE FROM MIMEOGRAPHED SHEETS TO SOPHISTICATED PERIODICALS. THE FORMAT AND FREQUENCY OF PRISON PUBLICATIONS DEPEND LARGELY ON THE AVAILABLE FACILITIES AND FUNDS. THE RANGE OF SUBJECTS COVERED IN THESE NEWSPAPERS IS DESCRIBED, AND SAMPLE ARTICLES AND FEATURES FROM EXISTING PRISON PAPERS ARE PRESENTED. AMONG THE SUBJECTS OFTEN FOUND IN THESE NEWSPAPERS ARE PRISON LIFE, SPORTS ACTIVITIES, LEGAL COLUMNS, HUMOR, AND EVEN EDITORIALS. INMATE-PRODUCED RADIO PROGRAMS AND NEWS PROGRAMS ARE A RELATIVELY NEW PHENOMENON. TWO EXISTING RADIO PROGRAMS FOR INMATES ARE BRIEFLY DESCRIBED. FINALLY, THE PROBLEM OF CENSORSHIP OF PRISON NEWSPAPERS AND RADIO PROGRAMS IS EXAMINED.
