A DISCUSSION OF PRISON PROBLEMS SUCH AS MANAGEMENT, COMMUNICATION, STAFF TRAINING, AND PRISON ACTIVITIES, DEMONSTRATING THE ADVERSE EFFECTS OF THE TRADITIONAL PRISON ON BOTH INMATES AND STAFF.
Abstract
THE FOCUS OF THIS WORK IS ON THE TRADITIONAL CUSTODIAL INSTITUTION AS OPPOSED TO THE NEWER AND SMALLER OPEN FACILITIES. THE PURPOSES OF PRISONS, AND THE QUALITY OF PRISON LIFE ARE FIRST REVIEWED. PROBLEMS SUCH AS BOREDOM, LACK OF PRIVACY, INADEQUATE WORK, AND MEDICAL TREATMENT ARE DISCUSSED. ISSUES IN INMATE-STAFF RELATIONSHIPS AND RELATIONSHIPS AMONG INMATES ARE ALSO EXPLORED. THE EFFECTS ON PRISON LIFE OF PAROLE BOARD DECISIONS, RECENT RELEVANT COURT DECISIONS, AND PROBLEMS PARTICULAR TO WOMEN'S INSTITUTIONS ARE ALSO CONSIDERED. FINALLY, SEVERAL CONCEPTS OR SUGGESTIONS THAT COULD LEAD TO IMPROVEMENT OF PRISONS ARE OFFERED.
