A STUDY ON THE TRUE AGE-SPECIFIC INCIDENCE OF HEPATITIS IN A STATE PRISON POPULATION (MASSACHUSETTS) AND THE MEAN LENGTH OF TIME AFTER INCARCERATION AT WHICH HEPATITIS IS LIKELY TO OCCUR.
Abstract
THE FINDINGS IN THIS REPORT INDICATE THAT WHILE HIGH, THE INCIDENCE OF CLINICAL HEPATITIS IN A PRISON POPULATION IS NOT GREATER THAN THE TRUE INCIDENCE IN THE OUTSIDE MALE POPULATIONS OF THE SAME AGE. FOR THE MASSACHUSETTS CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM, THE RATE OF HEPATITIS IS 928 PER 100,000, WITH THE HIGHEST RATES IN THE 16-19 AGE GROUP AND IN THE 20-24 AGE GROUP. THE PHENOMENON OF UNDERREPORTING ACCOUNTS FOR THE SEEMINGLY LOW RATE OF HEPATITIS INCIDENCE IN THE COMMUNITY.
