Abstract
State correctional systems reported 809 escapes out of a total average daily population of 611,342 in 1992. The average number of escapes for each system totaled 18.81, but North Carolina and Florida reported the most with 205 and 204, respectively. State correctional systems reported 802 escapes out of a total average daily population of 652,982 in 1993. While the average number of escapes for each system totaled 18.65 in 1993, Florida reported the most with 227. Walkaways in 1992 totaled 4,111 and 5,365 in 1993. The District of Columbia had the most walkaways with 1,472 in 1993. Escape-related injuries and deaths occurred in some but not all correctional systems. Correctional systems reported 127 violent deaths in 1992 and 149 violent deaths in 1993. Violent deaths included inmates killed by inmates, staff killed by inmates, and inmates killed by staff. Inmate assaults on staff totaled 4,417 in 1992 and 4,829 in 1993. Inmate assaults on inmates numbered 7,118 in 1992 and 8,295 in 1993. Correctional systems reported 91 inmate suicides in 1992 and 100 in 1993. Prison disturbances totaled 151 and 186, respectively, for 1992 and 1993. Canadian correctional systems reported 222 inmate escapes in 1992 and the same number in 1993. Canadian correctional systems also experienced escape-related injuries and deaths, prison violence, inmate suicides, and prison disturbances. Detailed data are provided on prison escapes and violence in both the United States and Canada. 6 tables
