THIS 1979 ANNUAL REPORT BY THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND, CANADA, DISCUSSES ACTIVITIES OF 12 CRIMINAL JUSTICE DIVISIONS AND COMMISSIONS, INCLUDING LAW REFORM, THE COURTS, VARIOUS COUNSELS, AND PRISONS.
Abstract
THE LEGAL SERVICES DIVISION PROVIDES LEGAL ADVICE AND REPRESENTATION TO ALL GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS AND MOST CROWN CORPORATIONS AND AGENCIES, AND HELPS TO DRAFT LEGISLATION. THROUGH ITS JUDICIAL DIVISION, THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE SUPPLIES PERSONNEL AND ASSISTANCE TO PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND'S SUPREME COURT AND PROVINCIAL JUDGES. IN THE CORRECTIONS DIVISION SECTION, A NEW PRISON, SERVICES TO COUNTY JAILS, STAFF TRAINING, AND PRISONER ACTIVITIES ARE NOTED. NO PRISONER DEATHS WERE REPORTED IN PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND IN 1979, FOR THE FOURTH STRAIGHT YEAR. PRISONER STATISTICS SHOW A TOTAL OF 2,423 JAILED OR IMPRISONED IN 1979. INFORMATION ON PROBATION AND FAMILY COURT SERVICES SHOWS 285 ADULT PROBATIONERS, EXPANDED USE OF COMMUNITY SERVICE IN LIEU OF OR BESIDES IMPRISONMENT, AND INCREASING DEMANDS ON THE RECENTLY ESTABLISHED FAMILY COUNSELORS TO CONDUCT CHILD CUSTODY INVESTIGATIONS AND OTHER ACTIVITIES. OTHER FAMILY COURT SERVICES PROJECTS INCLUDE THE SUMMER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM AND YOUTH JOB CORPS. IN 1979, THE LAW REFORM COMMISSION COMPLETED PROJECTS IN WILLS AND PROBATE LAW. THE YEAR 1979 WA S THE SIXTH YEAR OF PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND'S PUBLIC DEFENDER PROGRAM, WHICH IS VIEWED WITH MUCH FAVOR BY JUDGES. PUBLIC DEFENDER ASSISTED 304 PERSONS IN 1979; INFORMATION IS PROVIDED ON ELIGIBILITY AND THE CLIENTS INVOLVED. THE ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE CONTINUES TO ENFORCE THE LAWS ON PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND, EMPLOYING 147 OFFICERS AND STAFF, AND ARE INVOLVED WITH COMMERCIAL CRIME, DRUG CONTROL, AND TRAFFIC LAW ENFORCEMENT.
