This book provides a brief guide to the wide range of strategies and tactics used in primary prevention research and demonstration projects.
Abstract
The focus is on primary prevention, defined as coordinated actions designed to prevent predictable problems, protect existing states of health and healthy functioning, and promote desired potentialities in individuals and groups in their physical and sociocultural settings over time. A configural equation is presented that identifies classes of factors to be considered in any thorough analysis of a given situation. This configural equation places a demand on practitioners to be more explicit regarding service plan components and weightings assigned to each component. Book chapters cover primary prevention based on the following dimensions: individual strengths and limitations, social supports and stresses, resources, and pressures from and on the physical environment. The systematic application of primary prevention methods is discussed. Additional information on primary prevention sources, theory, and models is appended. References, tables, and figures
