In response to the challenges facing American families in raising adolescent children, preventive programs have begun to emerge that are designed to support and strengthen these families.
Abstract
In establishing a framework for understanding the needs of families with adolescents, this report discusses the functions of families, the basic needs and protection of adolescents, developmental guidance and support, advocacy, and the relative importance of parental functions and competencies. Factors that support or undermine parental competence include personal and psychological resources of parents, characteristics of the adolescent, and contextual sources of stress and support (marital relationships, informal and formal social supports, and work). The implications of the framework are outlined followed by a discussion of programs for families with adolescents including general parenting programs, sexuality programs, alcohol and drug prevention programs, achievement programs, and multi-service family resource centers. Recommendations focus on current gaps in programs for families with adolescents, guidelines for implementing effective programs, and future directions in research and evaluation. 8 tables and 98 references
