These program models summarize and analyze experiences of local government in the United States in preventing and responding to problems of official corruption.

Abstract

Police, prosecutors, and other criminal justice agencies have an important role to play in combating official corruption. An even greater role must be played by elected officials, managers, and the public, since the first line of defense against corruption must be effective prevention, detection, and control programs. This report focuses on the experiences of local government agencies and citizens' groups rather than on criminal justice strategies. The report includes: (1) using laws and policies to fight corruption; (2) remedies in management and administration; and (3) remedies from the outside. Appendixes, bibliography, tables
