Since its creation in 1970, the Police Foundation has sought to increase police effectiveness in controlling crime, maintaining order, and providing humane and efficient service; to this end, the foundation has examined traditional police practices, tested new ways of delivering police services, improved the quality of police personnel, and assisted in the recruitment and promotion of women and minorities.
Abstract
The focus of the foundation is on five basic program areas: (1) promoting police effectiveness; (2) defining new strategies and technologies; (3) investigating basic research questions in policing; (4) defining boundaries of the police role; and (5) defining the future of policing. The agenda of the foundation calls for a critical look at existing policing practices, with a view toward the future of law enforcement. In addition, the agenda recognizes the importance of research on police practices and the need for a strong basic research program. Recent innovations in policing are examined, such as community policing and problem-oriented policing, and crime prevention opportunities suggested by recent studies of crime situations and places are noted.
