AN OVERVIEW OF THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL ISSUES AND DEVELOPMENTS IN THE STUDY OF DETERRENCE IS PROVIDED IN A COLLECTION OF 10 ARTICLES.
Abstract
THE VOLUME OFFERS A COMPREHENSIVE LOOK AT DETERRENCE BOTH AS A THEORETICAL CONCERN IN CRIMINOLOGY AND AS A PRACTICAL GOAL FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEMS. THE INTRODUCTORY CHAPTER TOUCHES BRIEFLY ON THE PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF CRIME, CRIME PREVENTION AS A SOCIAL GOAL, APPROACHES TO PREVENTING CRIME, AND LEVELS OF ANALYSIS. OPENING ARTICLES INVESTIGATE PROBLEMS OF THEORY AND METHODOLOGY IN DETERRENCE RESEARCH AND DEMONSTRATE THE USE OF VICTIMIZATION DATA TO MEASURE DETERRENCE. TWO SUBSEQUENT ARTICLES EXAMINE THE POLICE ROLE IN DETERRING CRIME FROM BOTH THEORETICAL AND EMPIRICAL PERSPECTIVES. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PROSECUTION AND DETERRENCE IS QUESTIONED IN AN ARTICLE DRAWING UPON THE EXPERIENCES OF CAREER CRIMINAL PROGRAMS. OTHER ARTICLES DISCUSS DETERRENCE FROM DRUG OFFENSES, MEASURING THE INCAPACITATIVE EFFECTIVENESS OF FIXED PUNISHMENT, AND PROTECTION AND PUNISHMENT WITHIN THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM. THE CLOSING ARTICLE CONSIDERS THE LIMITS OF LEGAL THREATS AS INSTRUMENTS OF CRIME CONTROL. LISTS OF REFERENCES AND SUPPORTING DATA ACCOMPANY THE ARTICLES. SUBJECT AND AUTHOR INDEXES ARE PROVIDED. FOR ABSTRACTS OF THE INDIVIDUAL ARTICLES, SEE NCJ-55275-55283. (LKM)
