HINTS FOR PREVENTING BURGLARY IN THE CITY OF PARIS, FRANCE, ARE OFFERED, AND CHARACTERISTICS OF BURGLARS ARE DESCRIBED.
Abstract
EVERY POLICE STATION AND BOROUGH TOWN HALL IN PARIS STOCKS A BOOKLET, PRODUCED FOR THE PUBLIC BY THE MINISTRY OF THE INTERIOR, THAT CONTAINS PRACTICAL ADVICE ABOUT BURGLARY PREVENTION. THE PRESS AND RADIO AND TELEVISION NETWORKS HAVE ALSO COOPERATED IN THIS CAMPAIGN AGAINST BURGLARY AND THEFT. THE CAMPAIGN IS BASICALLY AIMED AT ENCOURAGING ALL CITIZENS TO PROTECT THEIR PROPERTY BY TAKING CERTAIN FUNDAMENTAL PRECAUTIONS. OF ALL HOUSE BURGLARIES IN FRANCE, 41.3 PERCENT ARE COMMITTED IN THE PARIS AREA, DESPITE THE FACT THAT THE CITY'S POPULATION IS ONLY 12 PERCENT OF THE NATIONAL TOTAL. BURGLARS IN THE CITY ARE ALMOST ALWAYS MALES FROM THE YOUNGER AGE GROUPS. MANY OPERATE BY DAY AS WELL AS AFTER DARK. ALL POLICE OFFICERS, WHETHER THEY WEAR UNIFORMS OR PLAIN CLOTHES, ARE INVOLVED IN BURGLARY PREVENTION. SPOT CHECKS OF BUILDINGS, THE ESTABLISHMENT OF SPECIAL TEAMS OF MUNICIPAL POLICE OFFICERS TO COMBAT CRIME IN GENERAL AND TO DETECT BURGLARIES IN PARTICULAR, INSPECTIONS OF BUILDINGS, MOBILE SURVEILLANCE TEAMS, AND EFFORTS OF OFFICERS WHO PATROL THE STREETS ARE MEASURES THAT HAVE BEEN TAKEN IN THE CAMPAIGN AGAINST BURGLARY. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE CITIZENS THEMSELVES INSPECT DOOR CONSTRUCTION, DOOR FRAMES, AND LOCKING SYSTEMS. MAIN ATTRACTIONS FOR BURGLARS ARE PROPERTY, ABSENCE, AND THE SITUATION OF A DWELLING. SAFES, ALARM SYSTEMS, AND THEFT INSURANCE ARE STEPS CITIZENS CAN TAKE TO PROTECT THEIR PROPERTY. (DEP)
