The field of pretrial diversion has been coming under attack recently and at least in one instance the attack was unwarranted. So says the author of this article, responding in detail to questions raised in an article appearing in Corrections Magazine.
Abstract
But the author's comments and thoughtful arguments go beyond the Corrections article, covering in some detail questions about diversion that have been raised in other arenas. See for example the author's response to the hypothesis that prosecutors use diversion programs to maintain control over people; the 'widening the net' theory discussed and reported in virtually every examination of diversion in the past decade. Read the author's discussion on the inter-relations between those trained in the law and those trained in social work. Her positive view of diversion and its impact clearly bears close examination by anyone involved in the field. (Publisher abstract)
