RESULTS ARE REPORTED FROM A STUDY THAT DEVELOPED SUCCESSFUL PREDICTIVE EQUATIONS FOR TREATMENT DROPOUT USING FACTORS RELEVANT TO THE TREATMENT PROGRAM CONSIDERED.
Abstract
SUBJECTS WERE 364 INMATES PROCESSED FOR ADMISSION TO THE MEMPHIS, TENN. CORRECTIONAL CENTER FROM NOVEMBER 1, 1976, TO NOVEMBER 1, 1977. OF THIS TOTAL, 59 INMATES LEFT THE PROGRAM DUE TO UNWILLINGNESS TO PARTICIPATE. THESE CLIENTS CONSTITUTED THE DROPOUT GROUPING. THE PROGRAM, PROJECT CERCE, IN WHICH THE SUBJECTS PARTICIPATED WAS A COMPREHENSIVE EDUCATION AND REHABILITATION EXPERIENCE DESIGNED TO HELP CLIENTS ACQUIRE THE ABILITIES AND SKILLS NECESSARY FOR A CRIME-FREE, ECONOMICALLY PRODUCTIVE LIFE. BASIC CHARACTERISTICS OF ALL ADMISSIONS TO THE PROGRAM DURING THE STUDY PERIOD ARE PROVIDED. FORTY-ONE DISCRIMINATING VARIABLES WERE TAKEN FROM INSTRUMENTS ADMINISTERED TO THE SUBJECTS AS PART OF THE INTAKE-SCREENING PROCEDURE. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE DROPOUT AND SUCCESS GROUPS WERE ANALYZED BY THE MULTIPLE GROUP DISCRIMINANT ANALYSIS TECHNIQUE. A PREDICTION PROCEDURE WAS DEVELOPED TO OBTAIN AN 80-PERCENT CORRECT CLASSIFICATION RATE. THE VARIABLES SELECTED FOR INCLUSION IN THE PREDICTION EQUATIONS INCLUDED THE COGNITIVE-EDUCATIONAL DIMENSION REPRESENTED BY THE LANGUAGE MECHANICS VARIABLE, THE PSYCHOLOGICAL ADJUSTMENT DIMENSION BY THE FOUR VARIABLES OF THE MINNESOTA MULTIPHASIC PERSONALITY INVENTORY, SPECIALIZED CRIMINAL ADJUSTMENT PATTERNS BY TWO VARIABLES OF THE PRISON CLASSIFICATION INVENTORY, AND BEHAVIORAL TENDENCIES BY TWO HAND TEST VARIABLES. EACH OF THE INSTRUMENTS AND THE VARIABLES USED ARE DISCUSSED. IT IS NOTED THAT THERE ARE OTHER FACTORS SUCH AS ATTITUDINAL SETS, SOCIAL VARIABLES, AND ENVIRONMENTAL PERCEPTION THAT MAY ALSO HAVE A BEARING ON ULTIMATE PROGRAM SUCCESS. RESEARCH IS CONTINUING IN AN ATTEMPT TO QUANTIFY AND ANALYZE THESE CATEGORIES OF FACTORS IN ORDER TO DEVELOP A MORE PRECISE CLASSIFICATION SCHEME. FIGURES, REFERENCES AND DATA ARE PROVIDED. (RCB)
