Abstract
THE REPORT IS IN THREE PARTS. PART I COMPRISES A GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO THE SUBJECT OF PREDICTION STUDIES, AN EXAMINATION OF WAYS OF MEASURING PREDICTIVE POWER, AND A REVIEW OF ABOUT FORTY STUDIES SELECTED FOR THEIR SPECIAL INTEREST IN REGARD TO DATA, METHODS, FINDINGS, OR PARTICULAR RELEVANCE TO PROBATIONERS. PART II DESCRIBES THE PROBATION PREDICTION STUDY AND ALSO CONSIDERS CRITERIA OF SUCCESS AND FAILURE ON PROBATION. PART III BRINGS TOGETHER THE EVIDENCE FROM PARTS I AND II IN A CRITICAL DISCUSSION OF THE DATA, STATISTICAL METHODS AND RESULTS OF THIS AND PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS, AND SPECULATES ON THE FUTURE OF PREDICTION RESEARCH.
