This codebook explains the variables, coding system, and research methodology used to gather a set of data focusing on the relationship between individual characteristics and recidivism for two cohorts of inmates released from North Carolina prisons in 1978 and 1980.
Abstract
Data came from all individuals for which complete records were available. The data file provides information on the background of the offenders, including their involvement in drugs or alcohol, their level of schooling, the nature of the crime resulting in the conviction, the number of prior convictions, and the recidivism following release from the most recent incarceration. The data file also provides information about the length of time until recidivism occurred. (Author abstract modified)
