Abstract
STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF THE RESPONSES OF 1374 AMERICAN MALES REVEAL THAT RETRIBUTION AND SELF-DEFENSE ARE THE TWO VALUES MOST CLOSELY RELATED TO ATTITUDES TOWARD VIOLENCE. BOTH VALUES HAVE POSITIVE ORIENTATIONS TOWARD VIOLENCE, ARE BELIEFS TO WHICH AMERICAN MEN HEAVILY SUBSCRIBE, AND HAVE BEEN POPULARIZED BY THE MASS MEDIA.
