The Post Release Employment Project (PREP) conducted by the Federal Bureau of Prisons is designed to analyze the potential differences between Federal offenders who receive prison training and work experience and those who do not participate in these activities. The data for the analysis were collected on more than 7,000 inmates released from prison between 1984 and 1986; data collection on post-release outcomes continued into late 1987.
Abstract
According to the preliminary findings, study group participants demonstrated better institutional adjustment than members of the control group. They were less likely to have misconduct reports and were rated as more responsible by their unit teams. Although study and comparison offenders were equally successful in completing halfway house stays, the study group inmates were employed more hours per work week. Inmates who participated in prison vocational training showed better reintegration and less recidivism, had higher employment rates, and earned more than inmates who had similar background characteristics but who had not participated in training programs. 5 tables
