INFORMATION ON THE BURGLARIES THAT OCCURRED OVER IN 41 MONTH PERIOD IN 11 TARGET AND 11 CONTROL PUBLIC SCHOOLS SELECTED FOR THIS PROJECT WHICH WILL USE IMPROVED ALARM AND APPREHENSION METHODS TO REDUCE SCHOOL BURGLARIES.
Abstract
THE GOAL OF THE PILOT PROJECT WAS TO REDUCE BURGLARY AND ITS RELATED PROPERTY LOSSES IN 11 HIGH CRIME INCIDENT SCHOOLS IN THE PORTLAND PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM. THE PROJECT WOULD UTILIZE A CENTRALLY MONITORED SILENT ALARM SYSTEM, RADIO EQUIPMENT, PERSONNEL AND PROCEDURES TO PROVIDE EFFECTIVE ALARM RESPONSE CAPABILITY. THE SCHOOLS CHOSEN FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE PROJECT WERE 11 PORTLAND PUBLIC SCHOOLS THAT POSSESSED THE HIGHEST LOSSES AND VANDALISM DUE TO BURGLARIES. PROJECT OUTCOME MEASURES WILL BE BASED ON A COMPARISON OF THE BASELINE DATA PRESENTED IN THIS REPORT AND THE POST-BASELINE BURGLARY FINDINGS FOR THE TARGET AND CONTROL SCHOOLS. AMONG THE BASELINE DATA ELEMENTS PRESENTED ARE THE NUMBER OF BURGLARIES PER NUMBER OF CASES CLEARED, THE RATE OF BURGLARIES, THE DOLLAR VALUE OF GOODS STOLEN, THE DOLLAR VALUE OF GOODS RECOVERED, AND THE AGE, SEX, RACE, GRADE, AND SCHOOL OF THOSE APPREHENDED FOR SCHOOL BURGLARIES.
