Abstract
THE AUTHOR GOES OVER THE HISTORY OF THE MUSLIM MOVEMENT, AND ILLUSTRATES ITS ATTRACTION TO BLACK PRISONERS. MALCOLM X, WHO ROSE TO PROMINENCE WITHIN THE NATION OF ISLAM, WAS CONVERTED TO ISLAM WHILE IN PRISON. ONE EFFECT OF THE NATION OF ISLAM IS A CALMING AND ANCHORING ASPECT THAT IT HAS ON BLACK PRISONERS. THE DISCIPLINE OF THE ORGANIZATION HAS HELPED IN PROTECTING AGAINST ACTS OF AGGRESSION, EASING THE TIME SPENT IN PRISON, AND IN PROVIDING FOR SUPPORT UPON RELEASE.
