This book examines policing and crime prevention and the interaction between them.
Abstract
The book emphasizes the need for police-community interaction to build a successful crime prevention program. It discusses the U.S. Department of Justice's "Operation Weed and Seed" crime prevention program and its current level of success, and other crime prevention strategies. It identifies the issues relating to the choice between public and private security agencies and discusses the techniques each type of agency uses. A section on crime prevention techniques and strategies in educational institutions also describes methods of reducing criminal victimization as well as lowering perceptions of risk and fear of crime. The successful Bibb County, GA, program to reduce crime on all the county's school campuses is presented as a model for community-based crime prevention through school-police partnerships. The book also discusses crime prevention techniques used by campus police, crime prevention in public housing, crime prevention and gangs, policing domestic violence, and the future of crime prevention strategies.
