This manual provides narrative and pictorial instruction for police use of the yawara stick, a 5.5-inch long stick used to thrust, strike, and apply pain to control an attacker or resisting subject.
Abstract
After listing the advantages and disadvantages of the yawara stick as a weapon, trainee's are advised to use it only to the extent required to subdue the subject. Areas of a subject's body that should not receive powerful strikes or thrusts with the stick are identified. After listing factors related to pain compliance, the manual depicts five grip techniques for the stick. Presentations of the stick's application to some 45 of the body's pressure points indicate how a minimum application of pressure can help an officer control a subject. Four blocking techniques are portrayed, followed by depictions of five protective counter strikes. Instruction also covers practical control techniques, basic comealongs, takedowns, driver removal, the prone control position, weapon retention techniques, and techniques for escaping from various subject restraint holds. Photographs illustrate each described technique.
