Abstract
CHANGES IN WORK CONDITIONS, THE LOSS OF SOCIAL STATUS, AND THE DESIRE FOR PROFESSIONALIZATION ARE IDENTIFIED AS FACTORS IN THE POLICE OFFICER'S MOVE TO ORGANIZE THE POLICE LABOR FORCE. SEVERAL POLICE ORGANIZATIONS AT THE LOCAL, STATE, AND NATIONAL LEVELS ARE DESCRIBED. THE GROWTH OF MINORITY (BLACKS AND WOMEN: POLICE UNIONS IS PREDICTED FOR THE FUTURE.
