THE ACTIONS THAT A POLICE OFFICER COULD TAKE IN DISCRETIONARY SITUATIONS ARE CONSIDERED IN THIS BOOK FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE STUDENTS AND POLICEMEN.
Abstract
THESE SITUATIONS ARE NOT COVERED BY REGULATIONS, LAWS, OR REGULAR TRAINING. THE FIRST TWO CHAPTERS ANALYZE CRUCIAL CONCEPTS SUCH AS DISCRETION, FULL ENFORCEMENT, AND THE SOCIAL ROLE OF THE POLICE. A MODEL POLICE TRAINING CURRICULUM AND SUGGESTIONS FOR REVISING TRAINING MATERIALS ARE INCLUDED. THE NEXT TWO CHAPTERS DISCUSS CONCEPT APPLICATIONS, THE THIRD CHAPTER STUDIES THE DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE AND HOW TO DEAL WITH IT, AND THE FOURTH CHAPTER DISCUSSES THE STREET GATHERING. A CROSS-SECTION OF EXISTING RIOT PREVENTION TRAINING MATERIALS AND A MODEL GUIDELINE ARE INCLUDED. THE FORMAT OF BOTH MODEL GUIDELINES IS FLEXIBLE ENOUGH TO BE APPLIED TO ANY SENSITIVE ENFORCEMENT PROBLEM. THE FIFTH CHAPTER PRESENTS HYPOTHETICAL POLICING SITUATIONS IN DETAIL. THESE INCLUDE A LANDLORD-TENANT ARGUMENT, A DRUG BUST AT A LARGE ROCK CONCERT, A FIGHT ON THE STREET, A VIOLENT AND MENTALLY ILL PERSON, A SNIPING INCIDENT, AND A RAPE. OTHER SITUATIONS ARE A DRUNK LYING IN THE STREET, A NOISY PARTY, A SPEEDER, A PAROLEE WHO IS A SUSPECT IN A CRIME, AND A STREET-WALKING PROSTITUTE. THE READER MUST DECIDE HOW TO HANDLE EACH CASE BY APPLYING THE INFORMATION AND SUGGESTIONS FROM PREVIOUS CHAPTERS. FOOTNOTES WITH REFERENCES AND AN INDEX ARE INCLUDED.
