Abstract
THE ENTIRE TEXT OF THIS MANUAL IS DEVOTED TO FAMILIARIZING AND IMPROVING THE INDIVIDUAL POLICE OFFICER'S EXPERTISE WITH WHAT THE AUTHOR CONSIDERS TO BE THE MOST EFFECTIVE WEAPON AVAILABLE FOR POLICE WORK THE SHOTGUN. THE AUTHOR ILLUSTRATES AND ANALYZES THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ROLE OF THE SHOTGUN IN LAW ENFORCEMENT AROUND THE WORLD, TRACING THE HISTORY OF ITS DEVELOPMENT FROM EARLIEST USES TO SUCH MODERN TACTICAL SITUATIONS AS ROUTINE PATROL, ANTI-SNIPER OPERATIONS, RIOT CONTROL, AND COMBATTING GUERRILLA INSURGENCY. THE MAJOR PORTIONS OF THE BOOK ARE CONCERNED WITH DAY-TO-DAY USES AND APPLICATION OF THE SHOTGUN. TECHNICAL INFORMATION IS PROVIDED ON VARIOUS TYPES OF AMMUNITION FROM BIRD AND BUCKSHOT THROUGH AERIAL FLARES, TEAR GAS, AND OTHER SPECIAL PURPOSE SHELLS. DIFFERENT METHODS OF SHOTGUN HANDLING ARE DISCUSSED, AS WELL AS THE USE OF TEAR GUN GRENADES AND LAUNCHERS, AND THE A & W DIVERTER. LESSON PLANS FOR THE FIREARMS INSTRUCTOR ARE APPENDED WHICH OUTLINE SAMPLE TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR THE INTRODUCTORY LEVEL THROUGH ADVANCED TACTICS AND USE OF SPECIAL EQUIPMENT.
