Because police are involved with the families of murder victims at several levels, there needs to be a reassessment of the best way to ensure that the family gets the best response and the true quality of service they want and deserve.
Abstract
The first involvement between police and family is when somebody has to notify the next of kin. Police officers also have to ask a family member to identify the body. Probably the most stressful role in which any officer can be immersed is acting as the family liaison officer. Liaison officers must consider issues related to the release of the body, family emotions, and the trial. After the trial, the family liaison officer, senior investigating officer, Victim Support coordinator, and Victim Support worker should meet to discuss the handling of the family, ensuring that any problems or lessons learned are addressed.
