Abstract
THIS IS A SUPPLEMENTAL SECTION OF THE POLICE REFERENCE NOTEBOOK. THE PROCESS OF SUPERVISION AND ITS MANY RESPONSIBILITIES, INCLUDING THAT OF SELF-DEVELOPMENT, ARE TREATED. THE CONCEPTS OF AUTHORITY AND CONTROL ARE EXAMINED AND THE CHARACTERISTICS AND QUALITIES OF EFFECTIVE LEADERS DELINEATED. THE SUPPLEMENT EXPLORES PRINCIPLES OF COMMUNICATION, PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS OF SUPERVISION, AND PROFESSIONAL POLICE ETHICS. THE VARIOUS AREAS IN WHICH THE POLICE SUPERVISOR HOLDS RESPONSIBILITY ARE DISCUSSED, INCLUDING TRAINING OF NEW PERSONNEL, DECISION-MAKING, HANDLING EMPLOYEE COMPLAINTS, MAINTENANCE OF MORALE AND DISCIPLINE, AND MOTIVATION OF SUBORDINATES. PLANNING AND EVALUATION OPERATIONS SUCH AS PREPARATION OF WORK ASSIGNMENTS AND MEASUREMENT OF WORK PERFORMANCE AND PERSONNEL EFFICIENCY ARE CONSIDERED.
