AN ATTEMPT TO PLACE 1000 NEW OFFICERS IN MICHIGAN'S LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES IN A 12 MONTH PERIOD.
Abstract
A WORKING BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND STAFF WAS ORGANIZED. NEWS ARTICLES, POSTERS, CARDS, BROCHURES, LEAFLETS AND BUTTONS WERE PRODUCED AND DISTRIBUTED. TAPES AND SPOT ANNOUNCEMENTS WERE MADE OVER 15 TELEVISION STATIONS. LOCAL POLICE RECRUITMENT COUNCILS WERE ESTABLISHED AND SPECIAL PROGRAMS FOR ADVISORY COUNCILS PREPARED. A PROJECT REFERRAL OFFICE ACCEPTED INQUIRIES, APPLICATIONS, REFERRALS, AND FOLLOWED UP ON THEM. AN ANALYSIS AND EVALUATION INDICATED THAT THE GOAL OF 1000 WAS NOT MET BUT WAS UNREALISTIC TO BEGIN WITH. CIVIL DISORDERS IN 1967 SET THE PROJECT BACK IN EFFORTS TO GET BLACK APPLICANTS. STATISTICS ARE PRESENTED IN APPENDIXES.
