Abstract
THE AUTHOR EXAMINES THE CHARACTERISTICS AND USES OF A RECORDS SYSTEM IN SIXTEEN DIFFERENT AREAS OF POLICE WORK, INCLUDING CRIME PREVENTION, APPREHENSION OF OFFENDERS, TRAFFICE ACCIDENTS, AND PERSONNEL ASSIGNMENT AND PROMOTION. THE VALUE OF EMPLOYING MODERN COMPUTER INFORMATION SYSTEMS AT LOCAL, STATE, AND NATIONAL LEVELS IS PRESENTED. THE APPENDIX INCLUDES SAMPLE RECORD FORMS AND A LISTING AND DEFINITIONS OF CRIME CLASSIFICATIONS USED IN UNIFORM CRIME REPORTS.
