This manual explains the need for training police mobile radio users, how the mobile equipment works, antenna placement and theory, and how to talk on the radio.
Abstract
The explanation of equipment operation focuses on the transceiver, the control head and its placement and operation, and microphone operation. The discussion of radio procedures primarily addresses vocal characteristics, which pertain to voice and communication clarity, brevity, formality, voice tone, and procedures when the channel is busy and the radio is unattended. Instruction on antenna placement distinguishes placement procedures for various types of antennas. The antenna discussion also considers radio frequency and wave length, wave length versus antenna size, and frequency characteristics. Guidelines are provided for radio conversations regarding a report that the field unit is in service, routine status changes, assignments, arrival at an assignment, traffic stops, shift end, and some special circumstances. Philosophies pertaining to mobile radio use are reviewed.
