This report describes the structure and function of the National Police Agency at the national and regional level and its affiliated organizations.
Abstract
It presents a historical overview of the evolution and organization of the current Japanese police system as mandated by the 1954 Police Law. Administrative information is provided as well as information on recruitment, education, training, budget, and equipment. Patrol police activities cover criminal investigation of State penal code offenses, organized racketeer groups, international crimes, control of firearms and swords, stimulants and drug offenses, and economic offenses. Additional police activities include criminal identification and crime prevention measures such as workshops for crime prevention groups or juvenile delinquency as well as traffic and security. Utilization of computers, police communication network and its activities, compensation for victims of crime, and harmonious relations with citizens are also included as police responsibilities. 21 photographs and numerous tables
