The campus police information system described in this article would supplement traditional methods of communicating with the police by allowing citizens to report incidents and police to respond to the needs of the community more effectively.
Abstract
Specialized application software could be used to allow citizens to communicate with the police directly. This user- friendly system would employ screens through which the citizen could provide information commonly found on a standard incident report. The police department would receive the report electronically, review it, and log it into the agency database. The complainant, who could keep apprised of the case's status via the network, would be contacted by police officers for additional information or clarification. In an expanded form, this system could provide general information to the public, supplement automated telephone information systems, receive anonymous tips, and provide information to community crime prevention groups. Campuses are ideal candidates for this type of police information system because of the large number of users who are already connected by a computer network. 2 references
