THIS BIBLIOGRAPHY ON POLICE EDUCATION AND TRAINING IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE A REFERENCE FOR SCHOLARS, STUDENTS, AND TRAINERS WHO NEED INFORMATION ABOUT CURRENT ISSUES AND CONTROVERSIES IN THE AREA.
Abstract
THE BIBLIOGRAPHY WAS COMPILED AS A RESULT OF THE PROLIFERATION IN THE NUMBERS AND TYPES OF LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINING PROGRAMS AND THE DEBATE ABOUT THE TYPE OF TRAINING MOST APPROPRIATE FOR POLICE OFFICERS. ATTENTION IS DIRECTED TO THE CONTROVERSIES OVER WHETHER POLICE TRAINING SHOULD BE CONTROLLED BY POLICE ACADEMIES OR BY DEGREE PROGRAMS AND WHETHER 2-YEAR DEGREES OR 4-YEAR DEGREES ARE MORE APPROPRIATE. THE BIBLIOGRAPHY HAS FOUR SECTIONS. THE SECTION ON REPORTS AND ARTICLES PERTAINING TO COLLEGES CONTAINS 50 REPORTS AND CURRICULUM DESCRIPTIONS. THE SECTION ON ADDITIONAL REPORTS AND BOOKS ON EDUCATION LISTS 40 SOURCES, MOST PUBLISHED SINCE 1971. IN ADDITION, 141 RECENT JOURNAL AND MAGAZINE ARTICLES AND 35 THESES AND DISSERTATIONS ARE LISTED. THE BIBLIOGRAPHY PRESENTS CASE HISTORIES ON NUMEROUS KINDS OF PROGRAMS AS WELL AS RESEARCH ARTICLES EVALUATING THE PROGRAMS. SIGNIFICANT POSITION PAPERS AND ARTICLES DEFINING POSITIONS TAKEN BY EDUCATORS ARE ALSO LISTED. ANNOTATIONS ACCOMPANY MANY OF THE LISTINGS. AUTHORS' BIOGRAPHIES ARE INCLUDED. (CFW)
