Abstract
The police are an integral part of present day society. A society cannot live and progress without an effective, sincere and honest police force. The Indian police force has its roots in ancient history and the present day force is the outcome of an evolutionary process. Today's force has inherited some negative factors from the old system, including corruption among police officers. This article addresses police corruption and factors responsible, and suggests remedies. The basis for the discussion is various police commission reports and a survey conducted by the author.
