SOCIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF THE GROUP AND INDIVIDUAL PRESSURES LEADING TO CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR BY POLICE.
Abstract
THE STRUCTURALIST AND SYMBOLIC INTERACTION THEORIES ARE USED TO EXPLAIN POLICE CORRUPTION. THE STRUCTURALIST VIEWPOINT IS THAT POLICE SUFFER FROM GOAL BLOCKAGE IN THAT SUCCESS, AS MEASURED BY PROMOTIONS AND INCREASED SALARY, IS NOT READILY AVAILABLE. POLICE THEN TURN TO NONLEGITIMATE SOURCES OF INCOME. THE SYMBOLIC INTERACTIONISTS MAINTAIN THAT AN INDIVIDUAL'S GROUP IDENTIFICATION CAN BE WITH EITHER HONEST OR DISHONEST FELLOW OFFICERS AND THAT SOCIALIZATION INTO ONE GROUP OR THE OTHER IS PREDICTIVE OF BEHAVIOR.
