SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVING THE CONCEPT OF POLICE COMMUNITY RELATIONS AND A REPORT ON THE MICHIGAN INSTITUTE ON COMMUNITY RELATIONS AND THE ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR ASSERTS THAT ALTHOUGH POLICE COMMUNITY RELATIONS HAVE IMPROVED MUCH IN THE PAST TWO DECADES, THE EFFORT NEEDS A MORE POLITICAL ORIENTATION TO SOLUTIONS, A MORE PREVENTIVE APPROACH TO DISCUSSION OF CRIME PROBLEMS, AND A MORE COMPREHENSIVE INVOLVEMENT IN ALL PHASES OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. THE ORIENTATION OF THE MICHIGAN PROJECT, A SERIES OF WORKSHOPS FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS AND OTHER CITIZENS IN CERTAIN MICHIGAN CITIES, WAS BASED ON SOLVING DIFFICULTIES PERCEIVED IN THE ORGANIZATION AND PROCEDURES OF THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE ON POLICE AND COMMUNITY RELATIONS. THE WORKSHOPS STRESSED THE AUTONOMY OF PARTICIPANTS IN DETERMINING PURPOSE, AND APPROACH, THE USE OF LEAA STANDARDS AND GOALS FOR EVALUATION, AND DISCUSSION OF THE INTERRELATEDNESS OF AN IDEAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. LISTS ARE GIVEN OF FACTORS SEEN TO HELP OR IMPEDE SUCCESS OF THE WORKSHOPS, AS WELL AS A LIST OF PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN.
