Abstract
The first feature article in this issue of The Police Chief identifies race and ethnicity as playing an active role in police service perceptions; however, the difficulties in quantifying bias-based policing through data collections are challenges for police administrators and trainers when formulating an updated training curriculum focused on legal and ethical guidelines. The article examines taking race out of the perception equation when updating ethics training. The second article familiarizes law enforcement managers and supervisors with the cognitive rationalizations that can contribute to unethical behavior. It offers strategies and suggestions intended to mitigate misconduct. The third article targets how agencies can attend and respond to adverse or distressing psychological reactions after officer-involved shootings to assist involved officers and ensure that when they return to work, agencies are prepared to properly address an officer's psychological suitability to resume their public safety responsibilities. The fourth article is an excerpt from a speech delivered at the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) global policing summit in France in September 2010, where Alain Bauer provides an overview on the theme of the conference: terrorism and the prevention of youth radicalization. The final article features the 2010 IACP awards presented at the 117th Annual IACP Conference.
