Abstract
AN EXAMINATION OF THE VARIED ROLE OF THE POLICE IN OUR DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY DEALS WITH THE CONSTITUTIONALITY OF VARIOUS POLICE PRACTICES, POLICE ON THE CAMPUS, POLICE IN THE GHETTO, ILLEGAL DETENTION, THE RIGHT TO BAIL, CONFESSIONS AND INTERROGATION, THE USE OF FORCE, SEARCH AND SEIZURE, THE RIGHT TO COUNSEL, CIVILIAN REVIEW BOARDS, THE REQUIREMENTS FOR VALID ARRESTS, AND PRESENTS RECOMMENDATIONS FOR MORE EFFECTIVE POLICE WORK. JUDGE ASCH DISCUSSES THE OBLIGATION OF THE POLICE TO USE THEIR POWER TO UPHOLD THE LAW WHILE RESTRAINED BY THE CONSTITUTION AND THE COURTS IN ORDER TO PRESERVE THE PERSONAL FREEDOM OF ALL CITIZENS.
