CRITICISM OF SOCIOLOGICAL ANALYSES OF THE POLICE WHICH CONCEIVE OF POLICE ROLES IN TERMS OF UNDEFINED ABSTRACTIONS WHICH HAVE NO SUBSTANCE IN THE REAL WORLD.
Abstract
THIS PAPER WAS A CONTRIBUTION TO THE FOURTH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON COMPARATIVE CRIMINOLOGY, HELD IN MONTREAL, CANADA IN 1974. THE AUTHOR ASSERTS THAT WHEN WE USE AN ABSTRACT WORD LIKE 'SOCIETY' TO DEFINE WHAT THE POLICE ARE SUPPOSED TO DEFEND, WE OVERLOOK AND OBSCURE THE COMPLEXITY OF THE WORLD IN WHICH THE POLICE MUST WORK. SUCH ABSTRACTIONS ENCOURAGE THE CONTROL OF POLICE POWERS BY AN ANONYMOUS BUREAUCRACY WHICH MAY BE UNRESPONSIVE TO REAL NEEDS. --IN FRENCH
