Abstract
POLICE AND LAW ENFORCEMENT IS DIVIDED INTO FIVE SECTIONS, EACH WITH A PARTICULAR PERSPECTIVE. THE FIRST OF THESE DEALS WITH POLICE IN SOCIETY, AND CONTAINS ARTICLES WHICH EXPLORE THE ROLE OF THE POLICE, THEIR ATTITUDES, PERCEPTIONS, AND PROBLEMS. THE VARIOUS APPROACHES TO CRIME CONTROL AND PREVENTION TAKEN BY POLICE ARE EXAMINED IN THE SECOND SECTION. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN POLICE AND THE COMMUNITIES THEY SERVE HAS BECOME A MAJOR DOMESTIC ISSUE, AND THE SECTION ON POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS OFFERS A VARIETY OF VIEWPOINTS ON THIS QUESTION. POLICE MANAGEMENT, EDUCATION, AND TRAINING ARE EXAMINED ALSO. THE FINAL SECTION, ON POLICE REFORM, IS AN EXPLORATION OF BOTH THE PRESENT AND FUTURE OF LAW ENFORCEMENT. THE SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS OF THE KNAPP COMMISSION REPORT ON POLICE CORRUPTION ARE INCLUDED IN THIS VOLUME. THE ARTICLES ARE WRITTEN BY NOTED AUTHORS SUCH AS JAMES Q WILSON, JEROME SOLNICK, DICK GREGORY, AND PATRICK V MURPHY. THIS COLLECTION WILL BE OF INTEREST TO THE GENERAL READER AS WELL AS THE PRACTITIONER OR STUDENT OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, SINCE SELECTIONS HAVE BEEN CHOSEN FROM A WIDE RANGE OF SOURCES, MANY PREVIOUSLY UNPUBLISHED, OR NOT READILY AVAILABLE.
