Abstract
DIFFICULT AND UNPLEASANT POLICE DUTIES WHICH OFTEN GO UNNOTICED OR UNAPPRECIATED BY THE PUBLIC, SUCH AS INVESTIGATING ACCIDENTS OR DEALING WITH VIOLENCE ARE DISCUSSED. THE AUTHOR STATES THAT THE MAKING OF LAW AND THE IMPOSITION OF PENALTIES ARE NOT FUNCTIONS OF THE POLICE. HE MAINTAINS THAT IN SPITE OF THIS, RESENTMENT OF DISAPPROVAL ABOUT PENALTIES AND LAWS IS DIRECTED AT THE POLICE, WHICH DAMAGES RELATIONS WITH THE PUBLIC. CHANGING POLICING TECHNIQUES, INVOLVING A REDUCTION IN FOOT PATROL AND AN INCREASE IN THE MORE IMPERSONAL MOTOR PATROL ARE ALSO VIEWED AS A POINT OF CRITICISM AND A DAMAGING FACTOR IN POLICE COMMUNITY RELATIONS. UNIT BEAT POLICING, WHICH MAKES A POLICEMAN PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE AREA IN WHICH HE LIVES IS SEEN AS ONE SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM. CHESHIRE POLICE ACTIVITIES INVOLVING COMMUNITY SERVICE, SUCH AS WORK WITH SOCIAL WELFARE AGENCIES OR VOLUNTEER WORK WITH YOUTH GROUPS ARE DESCRIBED.
