This paper on the police and Aborigines in Australia presents the following information by State and territory: Aboriginal population size, Aborigines' involvement in the police function, community liaison schemes involving police and Aborigines, and police training programs pertaining to Aborigines.
Abstract
Following estimates of the Aboriginal population in each State and territory, the paper indicates how Aborigines are involved in policing in each State and territory. Aborigines may be sworn constables or ancillary personnel such as trackers and aides. A review of community liaison schemes in each jurisdiction shows a growing trend toward improving relations between Aborigines and police. Various committees composed of police and Aboriginal representatives discuss relevant problems and opportunities for police-Aboriginal relations. A principal aim of such committees is the creation of mutual trust. All training curricula include lectures on police relations with Aborigines. In some cases, Aborigines assist in course preparation and lecture on Aboriginal history and culture. The paper reviews aspects of the relevant training course for each State and territory. 2 tables.
